ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal)
Overview
Ranked by National Geographic as one of the top sacred caves in the world, the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave is a live expedition into Xibalba, the sacred underworld of the ancient Maya. Tucked deep inside the protected Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, ATM offers an authentic, untouched archaeological experience where artifacts and human remains rest in the exact locations where Maya priests left them over a thousand years ago. Your journey begins beneath the lush canopy of the Belizean rainforest before transitioning into an adrenaline-fueled cavern adventure. Guided by NICH-certified ATM Guides, you will trek through jungle rivers, swim into the cave entrance, and wade through cathedral-like chambers adorned with towering limestone formations. This tour offers the rare privilege of witnessing an active archaeological site in its raw, natural state without glass display cases or artificial barriers. What to Wear & Pack Clean Pair of Socks (Mandatory): To prevent foot oils and shoe dirt from damaging the sacred Maya dry chambers, shoes are removed in the upper cave. You must wear socks to walk through these historic areas. Closed-Toe Footwear with Good Grip: Sturdy water shoes, trail runners, or sneakers are required for the hike and cave portion. Open-toed sandals or flip-flops are strictly prohibited inside the cave. Lightweight, Quick-Dry Clothing: You will get 100% wet, so avoid heavy cotton or denim. Full Change of Dry Clothes & Shoes: Leave a dry set of clothes, shoes, and a towel in the tour vehicle for your return after the hike. Reusable Water Bottle & Snacks: Hydration is key for the jungle trek before entering the cave. Important Rule: 100% Unplugged — No Cameras Allowed Beyond the Parking Lot To preserve these ancient artifacts and prevent damage to delicate human remains, the Belize Institute of Archaeology strictly prohibits all cameras, GoPros, phones, and video recording equipment beyond the park facility and parking area. Leave your devices securely in the tour transport and prepare for an entirely immersive, once-in-a-lifetime journey seen purely through your own eyes.
